Chapter 3

What does Vladek mean when he says, "Well at least I did something." Do you believe that he was justified in feeling this way? Explain.

  1. Vladek means that he at least he did something instead of sitting and not shooting. I think he could feel unhappy because he had to carry bodies that were wounded or dead. I think he was upset that he killed someone because he did not know what to shoot at. I think he felt happy that he did something rather than doing nothing at all.

  2. I think Valdek was proud that he actually made a difference and did something instead of nothing. So that when he was taken away it was for a reason. But he was still saddened that he had taken a life...

  3. I think it mean that Vladek knows that he did something and not just lying on the ground waiting for someone to shoot, instead he shot. I think he had mixed emotions. I thought he felt happy that he did something, but then sad that he had to take away a life.

  4. I think he was happy that he did something because he really didn't know what to do and just kind of shot. Also that he did a part in trying to stop these people from hurting Jews for no reason. Then he must of felt real lik discusted about having to carry the dead bodies away.
I think both him and his father treat Mala really rude. They should't talk to her like that she is only trying to be nice. I think they take advantage of her.

  5. I agree with everbody. I think he simply meant that at least he didn't sit around and do nothing .He made a move, and even though he got captured for it, at least he was captured doing something, not because he was being lazy and they noticed him. I understand his feelings, but coming from Vladek it surprised me. I expected him to be mad and wish he hadn't fired... I thought he would have called his young self "reckless".

  6. I think that Vladek said at least i did something because, he didnt just sit there and not shoot, he tried to defend himself instead of just not doing anything and being lazy. He was sad that he took someones life away but happy that it wasnt his life that was taken away.

  8. Well...i think that Vladek says that because he wanted to make a difference in the war and to help the people he was fighting for and everything but on the other hand i think he was shocked that he had just taken someone's life away.

  9. I think that Valdek meant that he did something instead of just sitting around in the grass. To me Vladek was happy that he did something in the war to help, but at the same time he was shocked with the fact that he had taken a life. Even though he killed someone and was caught, he made a slight difference in the war rather than sitting there doing nothing.

  11. I don't think Vladek really knew what he was doing, so he didn't know when to fire the shot. He was just glad that he did something, even though he shot the wrong person. I think he had mixed feelings about what he did. He was sad that he had taken someones life away, but he was glad that he finally did something.

  12. I think he felt kind of proud in shooting the Nazi. Sure, killing a man is wrong, but I think he had a strong feeling against the Nazis that would later grow and grow. When he says, "At least I did something," I think he means that he didn't know what he was doing really and it felt good do something right.

  13. I think that Vladek said at least i did something because instead of just sitting there waiting for something to happen he thought he saw an intruder and he wasnt just gonna sit there and wait to get killed!

  14. He was mad that he took a person's life and sort of depressed. But he was saying "at least i did something" to make himself feel better. Basically what he is saying is better that he shot that guy instead of that guy shooting him. But he was still saddened cause he killed a man but he saved his own life because of it. So it had to be done. Also he really didnt know he was shooting at a guy his general just instructed him to shoot anything that moves. So he saw a tree move and shot at it.

  15. I think what vladeck meant when he said at least he did something, that meant at least he actually got to shoot someone instead of sitting their being scared and doing nothing. I also think vladeck was glad he got to do something, but he probably felt bad that he shot and killed someone.

  16. I dont think it justified what he did. But i do think he was trying to convince himself that it was not that bad and that he did something than at least sit there and do nothing. He was trying to help his side win.

  17. Yes i do feel that he was justified to say that because he helped in fighting the war somewhat. even though he did kill someone it was for his side.

  18. I think Vladek means that a least he did something instead of just doing nothing at all or that he meant at least he killed one less person to worry about killing them. I think he sad he because he didn't want to go out of the war a weak man and that he was trying to convince himself that he did something.

  19. I think Vladek means that at least he didn't just sit there and do nothing. When there is war you kill people,he did not want to get yelled at again so he just started shooting. He thought it was better than doing nothing.

  20. I think what Vladek means when he said "Well, at least I did something," he means that he did not sit their and do nothing he shot his gun to make sure he stayed a live. He killed a man and went to the place where the man he killed lay dead and brought him to the red cross truck. He thought it was better to do something than to do nothing.
